If you’re a business owner with a website, this is for you.
If you’ve registered a domain name, stop what you’re doing and check this one critical thing.
Make sure the email address and phone number listed in your domain registrar account are:
• Not tied to your website (that means not you@yourdomain.com)
• Able to receive texts for two-factor authentication
A small oversight could bring your business to a full stop.
One Expired Credit Card. One Domain-Based Email. Zero Business.
A client came to us in a panic. His domain name had expired, and he couldn’t get it back online.
Because of that, his website was down. His email was down. And his business was effectively shut off from the outside world.
Here’s what happened.
His credit card expired, and the domain didn’t auto-renew.
When he tried to log in to his registrar account to fix it, he couldn’t get past two-factor authentication.
The verification code was sent to an email address that no longer worked—because the domain was down.
The backup code went to an outdated office number that couldn’t receive text messages.
He was completely locked out.
No access to his account. No way to renew the domain. And no communication with customers.
It took us two days to help him recover access. During those two days, his company had no website, no email, and no way to conduct business. He lost sales, missed appointments, and left customers in the dark. Some even wondered if he had gone out of business completely—because it all disappeared that quickly.
How to Protect Your Business Right Now
Log in to your domain registrar account—whether it’s GoDaddy, Google Domains, Namecheap, or another provider.
Check the email address on file. Make sure it’s an independent address, not tied to your domain. Use a personal account like you@gmail.com.
Check the phone number. It should be your current mobile number and capable of receiving text messages. This is how you’ll receive verification codes for password resets or suspicious activity.
Turn on auto-renewal and confirm that your billing information is current.
One small oversight can cost you more than you think
If your domain goes down, your entire digital presence goes with it. Your email stops. Your website disappears. Customers can’t reach you, and leads fall through the cracks.
